An Analysis of Fei Ming’s Theory on Free Verse

废名认为,旧诗与新诗或者非诗与诗的区别首先在于内容,前者是散文的内容,后者是诗的内容;其次在于文字,前者是诗的文字,后者是散文的文字;诗是诗的内容在散文的文字里得以自由、纯粹、完整表现的文学样式。

In Fei Ming’s opinion, the difference between classical poetry and free verse firstly consists in content: the former content belongs to that of prose while the latter that of poem; secondly, in writing: the former is the writing of poem, but the latter is of the prose. Poem is a style of literature in which its content can be expressed freely, purely and completely by using the writing of prose.
