Traditional Chinese architectural though takes into consideration matters of; defense, social hierarchy, an inward looking perspective, fengshui and traditional aesthetics. These aspects can be considered the essence of traditional architectural thought. The use of walls throughout city and yard architecture can be seen as a product of this thought. These walls try to satisfy humans material and spiritual need for space. In doing so, walls themselves have come to symbolize Chinese culture.
