Shakespeare's The Tempest reveals obliquely the intense political struggle confronting England in the early 17th century, within and without the country. On the one ha nd, it supports kingship; on the other hand, it is in favor of colonial domination, which is har d won and not fully justified. Prospero's art, a metonymy of actual colonial military invasion, is ever challenged by Caliban the unconquerable master of the island.
