China imported wheat from Canada for the first time in 1960 to tide over the famine, which changed the past self-sufficiency in grain in the country. The wheat transactions between the two countries ensured the safety of grain supply and pushed forward the agricultural reform in China. Furthermore, the trade accelerated China's return to the markets of Canada and the West, multiplied foreign trade channels, promoted the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada and helped smash the American policy of blockade and isolation against China.
