In a postcolonial perspective, this article approaches the issue of identity in The Jade Peony. It points out that by rewriting of the Chinese immigrants in Canada and depicting the life of the Chinese Canadians and the traditional Chinese culture, the novelist questions racism and cultural hegemony, deconstructs the binary oppositions between the east and west, and accomplishes identity claim. In the novel the author also conveys his concern about human nature in the pursuit of identity.
