A Re-Understanding of Faulkner’s Idea of Time Reflected in His Sounds and Fury

福克纳通过《喧哗与骚动》的创作展示了其独特的时间意识与时间哲学。其小说从章节题名到人物意识无不是福克纳独特时间观的具象性表现。福克纳的时间观是二相时间观———过去与现在,而非常识的三位时间观,即过去-现在-未来;在时间与空间之关系上,则体现为空间上的暂时悬搁与此时的跌落;在人物行动上则是无限期的延异与沉潜于既往;在事相呈象上则是以实为虚、化实为虚。

William Faulkner brings forth his particular understanding of his time philosophy through the creation of The Sounds and Fury. In every part of this novel is metaphorically embodied his idea of time. I hold that Faulkner’s time philosophy is two-dimensional (past-present) other than commonly accepted three-dimensional (past-present-future); in terms of the relationship between time and space, time is represented by its temporal suspension and its temporal dropping-out; due to this suspension, the action of the characters is constantly delayed and lost in the past and is never extended into the future; therefore, consciousness fails to be reincarnated in spatial images.
