Objective To investigate the relationship of microalbuminuria and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in hypertensive patients with type II diabetes. Methods One hundred and five subjects were divided into 3 groups: hypertensive patients (H group, n=36), type II diabetes patients (D group n=35) and hypertensive patients with type II diabetes (H+D group, n=34). The microalbuminuria was measured by immunochemiluminometric assay. The LVMI was calculated based ultrasonic cardiography (UCG). Results The microalbuminuria levels in all three groups were higher than the normal level. There were significantly differences in microalbuminuria levels and the LVMI between H+D and H groups and between H+D and D groups (both P<0.05). LVMI was positively related to the microalbuminuria, transferrin (TRF) and immunoglobulin (IgG) levels (P<0.05). Conclusion The microalbuminuria level in hypertension and diabetes patients increases and it is correlated with the LVMI. The coexisting of the microalbuminuria and the LVMI might aggravate the pathological changes.
