Abstract The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of titanium aluminides in aqueous and methanol solutions was investigated. It was first found that for titanium aluminides SCC could occur in these media. The normalized threshold stress intensity of SCC was KISCC/KIC<0.8, da/dt=(101-4-10-3) mm/hr. The difference in fractograph between SCC and overloaded fracture in air was not evident.
