Duan Yu-cai's Viewpoint of Dialectology

Duan Yu-cai's studies of dialect is related to the stylebook of Shuowen. His viewpoint of Chinese dialectology can be seen in his Annotation to Shuowenjiezi. He suggests that the region results in the dialect, in which there are archaic words. The place name is closely related to dialect, and the immigrant is an important reason influencing dialect. Duan Yu-cai's viewpoints on Chinese dialect are an important part of his linguistic theory, which can be used when we study the history of Chinese language and modern Chinese dialects.
