Starting with Sima Qian's interest in the “conduct” in the biography, this paper tries to find out the reasons why Sima Qian, the author of Historical Records, could make such extraordinary achievements in his human descriptions. It lays special stress on the consciousness with which Sima Qian took a keen interest in the conduct in the biography, on his advantage in understanding people and on the great efforts he made in this aspect. It also analyses by examples the achievements he made and the height he reached in the study of man's soul and man's nature.
