Saloon Culture and the Leisure Life of American Male Workers(1870—1920)

早在殖民地时期,酒馆就是当时社会的重要娱乐场所。工业化以后,随着社会分化日趋明显,酒馆逐渐成为男性工人的业余生活中心。工人在酒馆中形成了“另一种文化”,这种文化强调集体观念、互助主义。此外,在当时的社会权力结构中,工人是弱势群体,而且,不同社会阶层的生活方式和价值观念也不尽相同,在这些因素的影响下,酒馆文化引发了不同社会阶层之间的政治和文化冲突。

Still in colonial period, Saloon was a principal Leisure place for the people. After industrialization, along with the more clearly society polarizing, Saloon gradually became the center of leisure life for male workers. In saloon, a new culture formed among workers, which emphasized collectivity idea and mutual help. Moreover, workers were a disadvantaged group within the power structure in those days, and the life style and the idea were different for different social stratums. Affected by these factors, saloon culture led to the conflicts of politics and culture among different classes.
