A New Insight into Chi Li's Outlook on Love as Reflected in Her Novels

研究池莉小说爱情观的评论性文章大都将其归结为"不谈爱情",即只谈物质生活中的现实法则,而不谈精神层面的所谓爱情。但笔者以为池莉不仅谈论爱情,而且有她独特的见解。即:认为"上天好像并没有安排爱情。它只安排了两情相悦";"有一种办法可以保持男女两情相悦的永远。那就是两人永不圆满,永不相聚,永远彼此牵不着手。即使人面相对也让心在天涯,在天涯永远痛苦的呼唤与思念。""两情相悦"且"永不圆满",这就是池莉认定的在俗世中存在的所谓爱情的最佳状态。

There are many literary critiques which have looked into Chi Li's ideas on love as reflected in her novels. Most of the criticism has classified her novel into the category of non-love stories — stories that are not concerned with spiritual love but mainly with realistic rules in the material life. In my opinion, however, Chi Li not only deals with love in her novels, but also with her unique insight into it. She states that 'It seems that God has not arranged for love; what he has arranged for is bisexual admiration and affection'; Chi Li also states that 'One way to retain the eternality of bisexual admiration and affection is for those who love each other always to keep separated from each other and always to stay unmarried .' These statements express the optimal condition of the so-called love which, Chi Li thinks, exists among the common people.
