The long was one of the deities in legendary tales, which was taken as a lofty spirital image in the Chinese mind. Similarly, the Long King, another deity, who, like the Long, had the power of bringing about the storm and rain and controling all the waters, didn’t share the Long’s holiness and magnificence. Worse still, historical scholars and officials in charge of history writing ridiculed and depreciated the Long King in every possible way and added every personified character to him, greatly darkening his glory as a deity. The reason for this is mainly that, as an image from Buddhist culture, the mental status of the Long King was by no means comparable to the “national highlights”, whose implicature shows the society’s attack on the evil in the world.
