陈寅恪先生认为《长恨歌》与《长恨歌传》用诗传合一的体式来书写唐明皇和杨贵妃爱情故事,在结构上为“一不可分离之共同机构”。其实由于叙事诗和传奇体裁迥异,它们不但展现出诗歌和小说的不同艺术魅力,同时还反映唐中期诗歌与小说互相借鉴、交融,共同臻于艺术妙境的创作状态。在体裁艺术上同样为“不可分离之共同机构”。
