Abstract A mushroom is defined as a macrofungus with a distinctive fruiting body largeenough to be seen with the naked eyes and to be picked up by hand,Mushroom biologyis the discipline concerned with the scientific study of mushrooms.It incltudes not onlvcultivation but also deals with every aspects of mushrooms.Thus,mushroom biologyprovides the central knowledge for both mushroom sciece and mushroom biotechnology. Mushroom science deals with the principles and practices of mushroom cultivation andproduction and encompasses mushroom biology,bioconversion/composting technologyand environmental engineering.Mushroom biotechnology concerns the principles andpractices of mushroom products and encompasses mushroom biology,fermentation technology/bioprocessing,and marketing and management.Due to their unique taste and flavour and as medicinal tonics,the cultivation of mushrooms will not only be cointinued as ameans of increasing food production but will also emphasize their importance to medical research and in the development of beverages, pharmaceuticals and even cosmetics.
