The recovery ratio is a key parameter that is related with water permeability, pressure drop, cost and the motion type of fluid flowing through the membrane separation system, and so on. Fifty percent of the recovery ratio is considered to be a critical recovery ratio for one module, based on the relation between the Reynolds number and recovery ratio. The model of relation among total recovery ratio, partial recovery ratio and stages needed in a membrane separation is established in terms of the mass balance. For the multi-stages system with the recovery ratio over 50%, the optimization configuration can be determined by using the model and the weight factor that weighs the partial recovery ratio against total recovery ratio.
