The ancient town of Dachang, which is located at the bank of Daning River in Wuxi County,is the only well-protected ancient town in the Three Gorges area.It was first built in the seventh year of Chenghua of the Ming Dynasty(in 1471)and has a history of 1700 years. In history,Dachang was a vital communication line leading to Shanxi and Hubei and connecting the water route of the Yangtze River.Within the ancient town, you can find a large group of well-preserved ancient buildings with exquisitely carved roofs and beams. The buildings are of ancient styles and display the architectural characteristics of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The archeologists from the Chinese Academy of Social Science have found a large number of precious cultural relics, from which they infer that Dachang might be the capital of the ancient Ba people. After the Three Gorges Dam begins to retain water,Dachang will be submerged. Thus, the state cultural relics department has decided to remove and restore the ancient town as a whole.
