Joseph Conrad's social novel Nostromo becomes a classic in the twentieth century with its epically extensive scenes, original construction and profound ideology. But the study of it in China is far from being enough. The novel is interpreted in the light of its plot, language and character portrayal. It holds that in Nostromo Conrad's artistic views have been integrated into his way of handling the language and presenting the plot to heighten the aesthetic value of the novel. This way of constructing the novel enables the author to convey his personal experience and aesthetic ideas, to reflect society and human history more objectively and to enrich the implicitness and ambiguity of the novel.
