Two Solitudes is a novel about separation and unity. In this novel, the conflict between English-speaking Canada and French-speaking Canada is shown explicitly through the conflict between Father Beaubien and Athanase Tallard. Their conflict lies in the following aspect: the religious belief, the attitude towards industrialization and their attitude towards the war. That Hugh MacLennan chooses Two Solitudes as the title of the novel reveals his view that respect and love must characterize the relationship between English and French in Canada. Only love can succeed in bridging the solitudes.
