In 2004, China maintained balanced and quick economic development, with GDP increasing by 9.5%. Economic development drove sustained increases in the demand for hydrocarbon resources, enabling China's oil consumption to exceed 300 million tons for the first time. China's oil industry (including crude and gas exploration industry and oil processing), reported a gross value of industrial output (at current price) of RMB1164.48 billion in 2004, value added RMB361.537 billion, product sales income RMB1153. 96 billion, profit RMB198.38 billion and total pre-tax profits RMB292.545 billion, increasing by 34%, 12%, 33%, 48% and 40%, respectively, over the previous year. All of the three major state-owned oil companies achieved remarkable increases of their economic benefits, with all major economic indicators hitting record highs. To alleviate domestic oil supply pressure, the state-owned oil companies intensified their investment in exploration, resulting in remarkable increases in hydrocarbon reserves and in discoveries of a number of oil and gas fields, with reserves at the level of 100 million tons. Across China, crude output was 175 million tons, up 2.9% over the previous year; gas output 40.77 billion cubic meters, up 17%. The oil refining industry further optimized its resource allocation, with crude runs reaching 270 million tons in 2004, up 13.7% over 2003. China saw a new boom of construction of large-scale refining and chemical facilities. A number of landmark pipeline projects, including the West-East Natural Gas Pipeline Project, were completed and put into operation. China's oil industry smoothly accelerated its pace in enhancing joint ventures and cooperative projects with foreign investors. In the face of ever-fierce competition, Bajor state-owned oil companies sped up their strategic restructuring, resulting in a number of professional companies.
