Objective To study the effects of congenital human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)infection on development of fetuses and children. Methods 58 neonates with mothers active HCMV infection from January 1996 to August 2004 in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yetsen University were divided into two groups. 23 neonates with congenital HCMV infection and 35 uninfected. They were followed up on physical and neurological development for 1-8years. Urine HCMV DNA was detected in 1st and 6th month. Results The rates of malformation, low DQ and hearing impairment were significantly higher in group of congenital HCMV infection than those in uninfected group(P<0.05). Conclusion Congenital HCMV infection can lead to developmental abnormality in fetuses, and has long-term effects on intelligence and hearing capability. Proper perinatal management, follow-up and early intervention must be carried out for those infected neonates.
