The contents of Calcium(Ca) and phosphorus (P) in lesioned sites of rats with cerebral contusion were assessed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and chromometry respectively and Ca 2+ channel blocker (CCB), Verapamil was used for study of the treatment. The results indicated (1) primary trauma may cause Ca 2+ influx into the injured regions and lead to Ca 2+ increase at 2h and the maxincal increase at 8h which lasted at least for 7 days; (2) Ca 2+ influx may instigate secondary injury to brain tissue, which results in the lose of P; (3) Verapanil might partially alleviate the increase of Ca 2+ and the decrease of P. It is considered that verapamil is protective to the injured brain cells in certain extent.
