Whitman's poetic mind is oceanic. He not only wants to sing himself, “an American”, “of Manhattan the son”, but also wants to celebrate a nation, a country,“a kosmos”. Leaves of Grass, therefore, binds together a national, republic, and universal discourse with Whitman's personal, private, and individual words. It expresses both the poet's personal feelings and the spirits of the nation. It is a lyrical poem singing his self, it is also an epic poem celebrating the nation of American people. It is, indeed, a lyric-epic.
