On the Development of the Finding and Layout of Books in China

书籍装帧艺术,是一种客观存在的艺术形式,从古至今,在它不断演化变革过程中,始终离不开当时的历史条件,书籍利用文字、符号、图形记载着人类的思想和情感,它叙述着人类文明进程,传播人类文化。不同的社会生产力决定书籍装帧的物质组合形成和工艺手段,同时也反映相应的社会意识,装帧的价值不仅在于实用,更重要的是它的审美价值。

The finding and layout of books is an objective form of art, closely related to certain conditions in the history of it's continuous development. Books record the thoughts and feelings of human beings, describe the development of human civilization and spread the culture of human-kind with the help of characters, sings and pictures. Different social productivity determines the material forms and technological means of the finding and layout, and also reflects relevant social consciousness. Therefore, the value of the finding and layout lies in its usefulness and especially its aesthetic value.
