This article presented a brief introduction to the background of emergence of next generation network (NGN) and its features, with the emphasis on the core technique of NGN —— softswitch. This paper described the NGN in terns of its conception, development status, the benefits the NGN brings about to the telecommunication operators, and its market prospect. At the end of this paper, the problems presented in softswtch technique are outlined.
