As a comparative study of the Chinese and Western classical comedies, this paper holds that they differ greatly in cultural modes, historical generations and aesthetic and cultural psychologies. As far as classical Chinese comedies are concerned, they pay more attention to comic suggestions and beauty than Western comedies, which stress more on satire and comic ugliness. Coexisting in the same social system, classical Chinese comedies and tragedies do not distinguish much from each other in their essence. However, classical Western comedies, unlike tragedies that highlight their sublimity, excel in the delineation of humility. Therefore, they can be best characterized by their strong satire and comic ugliness.
