Araby tells the story that a Dublin teenager pursues his dreaming lover but ends in vain. Being deeply influenced by religion, James Joyce, author of Araby, employs a great number of religious symbols in his novel. This article tries to analyze and explain the various religious symbols, thus revealing Dubliners’ disillusion towards holy belief and the atmosphere of insensitiveness and paralysis in Dublin society.
