This paper deals with the inadequacies inherent with politeness as strategy and politeness as norm, arguing that the former attempting to justify the rationality of human action kicks off non-rational, unconscious and unpredictable elements in polite behavior, while the latter embracing a single set of politeness norms for a culture embodies simplification, idealization and, absolutism.
