The emergence of Shanghai as a city brought about significant changes in silk production and sales in the northern area of Zhejiang province. The sales pattern shifted from focusing on the domestic market as in the Ming and Qing dynasties to focusing on the overseas market. In the meanwhile, regional economic structure underwent profound changes in which Shanghai replaced Suzhou and Guangzhou as a sales center for silk products. Even the tradespeople engaged in silk industry changed: those from north Zhejiang emerged and gradually became a dominant force.
