关于社会主义的本质问题是邓小平理论中的重大问题。邓小平关于社会主义本质论的思想,是一个逐步形成与完善的过程,这一本质概括把"生产力"放在了社会主义本质的首要地位,在实践上为社会主义改革开放开辟了广阔的道路。但对于社会主义本质论的核心的理解存在两种观点,通过对社会主义本质与特征的辩证统一关系的分析,认为"共同富裕"居于社会主义本质的统领和核心地位,是社会主义的终极价值目标。

The Points at issue of the essence of socialism is crucial in Deng Xiaoping's Theory. His thoughts concerning the essence of socialism has undergone a period of gradual formation and perfection. This generalization puts productive force at the most important position as the essence of socialism, and has opened a wide road for socialist reform. However, there exist two arguments of the points at issue of the theory concerning the essence of socialism. Through analyzing the dialectical unity between the essence and characteristics of socialism, it is held that the idea of common prosperity occupies the dominant position of the essence of socialism, the final target to establish the value of socialism.
