Emily Bronte's Improvement in Gothicism

哥特传统在英美文学中影响广泛,许多一流的作家都借鉴了哥特传统的艺术手法。本文认为艾米莉.勃朗特的《呼啸山庄》在借鉴哥特传统的同时在小说故事的场景构筑、主题、人物情感和心理等方面对哥特小说进行了改造和发展,进一步拓宽了哥特小说的广度与深度,使这种小说更具有现实感、时代感和心理深度。

Gothic tradition has an extensive influence on English and American literature. Many first-class writers employ some devices of Gothicism in their writings. This paper holds that while employing the gothic tradition in framing her novel, Emily Bronte made some improvements in this old tradition from the aspects of its settings, its theme and its way of dealing with the protagonists' emotion and psychology. These improvements broaden the range of gothic novels and endow them with a sense of immediacy and reality. And most importantly, they introduce the technique of psychoanalysis in the depiction of gothic characters.
