The novel Arrogance and Prejudice by the English female writer Austine is a classic novel of romanticism. It reflects the status of middle class women in marriage during the transitional period between the 18th and the 19th century. They knew little about marriage and had little opportunity. For them, marriage was not for love but for the guarantee of economic status. By analyzing the Austine's views of marriage, this paper attempts to reveal that marriage at that time was only the tool for the interfusion of classes in society.
