Water-wheel is a major invention in the history of science and technology. With an analysis of relevant historical materials and on-the-spot investigation into certain extant traditional machinery) this paper inquires into the developmeat of the structures and principles of different kinds of traditional Chinese Water-wheels as well as such related machinery as the water-powered trip-hammer; water mill; water-powered roller; noria; astronomical instrument and water-powered bellows. It ends with a discussion on the origin of China's water-wheels and the possible impact of foreign Water-wheels on China.
