Hedging is a very common language phenomenon, and its research tends to be foc .sed on the study of its functions. Halliday' s Functional Grammar has expanded the research scope of hedges. Modality is, in a broad sense, an important component of hedging. Hence, hedges are often used to promote the acceptability of the discourse, making the discourse more courteous, persuasive and safer, and upgrading the expressiveness and flexibility of the discourse.
