By the knowledge of the quality of soil and the element of the domestic and international related standard, this text discussed the meaning of simple visual inspection and the reference of the theory and the way of inspection and so on. The application of simple visual inspection and manual test to the identification of soils is discussed. The recent development of the said method is introduced. It is the discussion about how to carry out the new request of visual inspection in《The Rock Soil Engineering Reconnaissance Specification》(GB50021-2001). Some suggestions are given for the future work.
