The Dialectic View on the Symbolic Nature of Language

辩证法认为,世界上所有事物都是矛盾的对立统一体。语言自然也不例外。语言的方便性与可靠性就是一对矛盾,导致矛盾的根本原因是语言符号的抽象性。语言符号的任意性与移位性极大地增强了语言使用的抽象性和灵活性,使得人们可以选择抽象的声音与线条组成符号来交流思想,创造文明,但语言符号与事实的脱节也使得符号内容的真实性无法得到保障。语言的符号性之于人类交际具有积极和消极两方面的意义。

In the light of the dialectic view, anything in the world is a unity of two opposite sides.Without exception,the convenience and reliability of language are in conflict.What leads to the contradiction is mainly the symbolic nature of language.On the one hand,the arbitrariness and displacement add much abstraction and flexibility to the use of language symbols,enabling people to make use of symbols composed of abstract sounds and lines to exchange their thoughts with each other and to create splendid human civilizations.But on the other hand,the abstraction of language symbols also allows mistakes to be made.The symbolic nature of language contributes to its dual significance, the positive as well as the negative.
