In Oates' works, females are always played with by violence. They are victims of violence and in the course of anti-violence they become doers of violence. They want to get rid of their misfortunes by way of pursuing money and love, but finally both money and love fail them. Their misfortunes lie in the male-dominated ideology and the weakness of females themselves.
