A View of Characteristics of Henan Market Towns in Their Growth in the Qing Dynasty

清代河南省集镇的整体发展过程及其特征表现为:在康熙末年恢复了兴旺生气,先后经历了乾隆、道光、光绪3个高峰期和嘉庆、咸同年间2个低谷期,各区域在集镇数量的增长率、递增率、平均占有率诸方面均存差异,总体上,全省集镇经济在清代处于波浪式前进,呈持续发展态势。

The history of the growth of Henan market towns as a whole in the Qing Dynasty presented several distinctive characteristics. The Henan market towns collected enough energy for flourishing in the late reign of Kangxi and witnessed three peaks of prosperity respectively in the reigns of Qianlong, Daoguang and Guangxu, but fell low in development in the reigns of Jiaqing and Xianfeng and Tongzhi. Throughout the dynasty, different regions differred in ratio of increase of the number of towns, ratio of successive growth and average of possession of towns. However, an overall view shows that the urban economy in the province advanced wave upon wave and assumed a trend of continuous development.
