A Close Study on the Revision of Poetry Translation by Prof. Xu Yuanchong

诗歌创作需要修改,诗歌翻译更需要修改。研究许渊冲先生诗词的改译,可知先生诗词改译的特点:改韵救义,删繁就简,内蕴毕现,诗意开豁,人称换位,重心转移,跨行增益,诗题改译,润色标点,诗行调整。

Poetry composition cannot dispense with revision, nor can poetry translation. As a distinguished translator of poetry, professor Xu Yuanchong is consistently revising his translations while doing extensive translations of ancient Chinese poems. Through a close study on the revision of poetry translations by professor Xu Yuanchong, this paper discusses the following ten situations: revision of rhyming scheme, line shortening, deepening of realm of poetry, expansion of poetic horizon, change of personal pronouns, shift of semantic center, from end-stopped lines to enjambment, title revision, revision of punctuations, and inversion of lines.
