Friction modifiers, antiwear & extreme pressure additives, and wear reconditioners consist of the more complete triboadditive series in the tribological sense, and they are chemically involved in the tribochemical reactions on tribosurfaces in the presence of thermal / stress fields and generate tribochemical films that are symbiotic third bodies composed of inorganic and organic species. The inorganic species construct the skeleton structures of the lubricious films with the organic species and simpler inorganic species adhering on or dispersing in the bulk structure in the state of adsorption or in the form of interstitial compounds, offering the whole wavelength of effectiveness of the tribochemical films—friction reduction, wear abatement,extreme-pressure and were reconditioning. The genesis and structure of tribochemical films were explained with viewpoints of minerals chemistry and organics chemistry.Specifically, considering the unique role played by stress chemistry in processes in rock physics, geochemistry and tribochemistry,an analogy analysis was made between the rock formation and oil genesis in rock physics and geochemistry and the boundary lubrication effect in tribochemistry. An interdisciplinary subject of chemistry was suggested of the tribo-induced rock formation and oil genesis. The endeavor is oriented to explore the effects of rock formation and oil genesis that are potential in the tribochemical field and their tribological implications, and to develop industrially significant tribological technologies well based on natural substances and processes.
