This paper aims to demonstrate the causes of literature image and tragic personality of Hemingway through the analysis of his life story as well as his novel ' A Farewell to Arms'. The author holds that Hemingway's tragic personality comes from his negative, pessimistic and cynical worldview, which foreshadows his tragic personality. The author points out that his negative, pessimistic and cynical worldview gets mixed with his spirit of 'dauntless man', with which together leads to the formation of his tragic personality. Last but not the least, the author believe that when we take a new and fresh look at Hemingway's spirit of 'dauntless man' and his tragic personality, we not only can better understand his inner self but also his novels as well.
