On the History and Implication of "Taklimakan"

By comparing phonetically and phonologically Uyghur terms, this paper holds that 'Taklimakan' does not mean 'one cannot come out once one goes in the Desert' and that 'Duhuoluo State' is made up. Tracing back the history of the term, this paper affirms that 'Taklimakan' means 'a land of diversiform-leaved poplar' or 'a place full of diversiform-leaved poplar.'
