A Reflection on "Debate about Outlook on Life" and the Cultural Pursuit in China's Modernization

20世纪中国曾先后发生两次“人生观论战”,两次论战都成为中国社会重大变革转型的前奏;反思两次论战的实质,归根结底是关于如何引导中国现代化的价值之争、文化选择之争;中国现代化的发展必须在中国已真正进入世界历史进程、世界正处在全球化与本土化两种基本潮流并存的境地以及中国现代化进程充满特殊矛盾的视野下进行文化选择。

The 20th century witnessed two successive 'Debates about Outlook on Life' in China, which served as the historical prelude to China's major social transitions. The two debates, in essence, are about how to conduct the value and cultural orientations in China's modernization. From the perspective of special paradoxes in the course of China's modernization, the cultural orientation made in the development of Chinese modernization should be conducted under the circumstances that China has truly entered the course of world history and that the globalization and localization co-exist in the world.
