“Paralysis”is the central theme of Dubliners,one of the earlier works of the Irish novelist James Joyce.The author presents the theme not only through disclosing the narrow and moribund social reality of the 19th Ireland and the effect of such reality on the lives of Dublin people,but also through dissecting and displaying the inner nature and spiritu- al essence of these people.The latter gives the theme subtler and deeper illustrations.Mr.Duffy,the protagonist ofA Painful Case,is a good representative of the Dublin intellectuals.Thus,to base the analysis of the major theme“paralysis” on an analysis of this character,and of his life that typifies the spiritual life of Dublin intellectuals would help in the un- derstanding of the spiritual aspect of the theme.
