The Moral Hypocrisy and the Separation between the Name and Reality of the Zhou Ritual and Music System during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty

东周时期,随着传统道德价值观的衰落,社会上逐渐兴起一股道德虚伪的风气。作为一种普遍的文化现象,道德虚伪主要表现为人们关于传统道德,如仁义、孝道、诚信的外在表现与实际行为之间出现了严重的分离和反差。该现象的产生与中国古代礼乐文化所固有的结构特征有直接关系,它是周礼名实分离影响下传统道德衰落的必然结果。

During the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, with the decline of traditional moral conceptions, there came into being a fashion of moral hypocrisy. As a kind of widespread cultural phenomenon, it included untruthfulness of mercy and justice, filial piety and sincerity and credit. The reason for the untruthfulness of morality lies in the structural characteristic of ancient system of rites and music; in fact, untruthfulness of morality during the period is the consequence of the separation between the name and its reality of the ritual and music system.
