This paper conducts a detailed survey on questers in E. M Forster's masterwork A Passage to India. Compared with the original quester, questers in A Passage to India are quite different; the latter lead a spiritual quest, focusing on the acquisition of harmonious and perfect human relationships. The displacement of this archetype just expresses the alienation, spiritual void and confusion human beings facing in a highly materialized society. However, just like the original quester, questers in this early modernistic novel still keep respectable nobility and morality, instead of walking into a spiritual wandering as questers in later modernistic or post-modernistic novels do.
