Objective Discuss the pathogenesis of the complications of diabetes and study the influence of the preparation for supplementing Qi, nourishing Yin, relieving Du and activating Luo on the complications. Method The levels of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and neurotensin (NT) in plasma and brain tissue are detected by using the animal model prepared by injection of streptozotocin into left lower peritoneal cavity and employing the radioimmunoassay. Results It shows that the level of NPY of plasma is significantly higher than that of brain tissue, whereas the level of NT of brain tissue is obviously higher than that of plasma in the diabetes rats. Since the level of NPY in diabetes rats is distinctively increased when compared with the normal control rats in the present study, it is likely that the diabetes rats are undergoing the complications of brain vessels. Furthermore, due to the significantly lower level of NT in diabetes rats compared with the normal rats, it is implied that the factors of cerebrovascular diseases are correlated with the secretive disorder of NPY and NT. There is no significant difference in the levels of NPY and NT between the administrated Chinese medicine groups and the normal groups. Conclusion The distribution and effect of NPY and NT in diverse organs and tissues of diabetes rats are different. The preparation for supplementing Qi, nourishing Yin, relieving Du and activating Luo can regulate the levels of NPY and NT, hereby can prevent and treat the cerebrovascular complications of diabetes.
