During the later Tang Dynasty, there existed a peculiar phenomenon of musical officials due to Emperor Zhuang's special fondness of actors with unduly trust. As a result, actors exerted political intervention with schemes behind the screen so that corruption and turmoil prevailed against the ruling powers. A careful anatomy reveals the following main causes for the phenomenon: the full development of music and art during the Sui and Tang Dynasties, which had lead to the rise of palace actors in power, Emperor Zhaung's devout love for music and his failure to adopt proper policy of personnel management, and finally the corruption of the political system of the Five Dynasties.
