The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s Economic Policy and the Cultural Conflict between China and West

根据现代新制度经济学理论,一项社会活动的运行是正式制度安排与非正式制度安排合理作用的结果。太平天国所制定的经济政策属于正式制度安排,它是在非正式制度安排即由文化演进所形成的行为的道德伦理规范的基础上形成的。太平天国的经济政策在初期取得了一定的成效,但是随着非正式制度安排中所包含的中西方文化冲突的不断加深,遂使太平天国的社会理想与现实经济政策逐渐背离,导致了其后期经济绩效的严重不佳。

According to the theory of modern new system economics, the motion of a social activity depends on the resultant forces of formal system arrangement and informal system arrangement. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s economic policy was formal system arrangement, and came into being on the basis of the ethics norm of informal system arrangement, and achieved some effect in the early days of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. With the development of conflict between Chinese and Western cultures that were constantly contained in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s social ideal, the policy gradually deviated from its realistic economical effect in the later period of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom.
