预设是通过词语和句法结构内嵌于句子或语段中的无须断言的命题或信息。预设的基本功能是为语篇的进一步发展建立一个框架,即预设可以决定后续命题在特定语境中的适宜性。

A presupposition, usually associated with a specific lexical item or grammatical feature, refers to the background belief in an utterance that must be mutually known or assumed by the speaker and addressee. The basic function of presupposition is to set up a framework for the information flow in discourse, that is, to determine the appropriateness of the following propositions in context.
